Warmest Regards,
Kathryn Sterling
CEO
A collective hush fell over the office and lingered there for many minutes. Lindsey just stared at the email on her screen. She’d wondered so often if she should have filed a harassment complaint. Why had she never done it? Her fear of sticking up for herself angered her almost as hotly as Mr. Harper had done so many times. Ten days ago, she’d been standing beneath his icy glare in his boring-looking office, on the absolute brink of spitting in his face or punching him in the stupid jaw.
Now tears pricked her eyes. It didn’t matter anymore. All those moments with him were whisked away along with his soul. Kathryn didn’t know about his prior behaviors, as far as Lindsey knew, and maybe she didn’t need to know. Not anymore.
There was something else. A fusion of rage and heartache and borderline nihilism swirling in her chest. It burned. It throbbed. It grinded against her ribs. The tears she held at bay tripped out of her eyes and she swiped them away with the back of her hand.
They weren’t tears of sadness, but a powerful empathy that made the loss feel like her own.
Lindsey was snapped away from the odd mix of brooding and musing and pain when a blubbering receptionist appeared in her doorway.
“Oh, Ferrell.” Lindsey stood and stepped close to the taller woman. Ferrell fell into Lindsey’s embrace, crying harder on Lindsey’s shoulder. Everything was weird. Lindsey was falling in love—for real, it seemed. Mr. Harper was dead. Ferrell was nice, and now, broken. Showing it.
Maddie rounded the corner, not quite blubbering like Ferrell, but certainly teary-eyed, and the three women formed a knot of something that felt like new friendship and solidarity. Lindsey’s tears gathered some more but didn’t spill again, just remained right there, threatening to fall, and not for herself. Not for Mr. Harper.
For everyone else.
Maddie was first to unlock arms and wipe at her eyes. “See y’all tomorrow, then?”
“Yes,” Lindsey and Ferrell answered in unison, and Maddie nodded and walked away.
The two women stood together in a moment of mutual understanding. Ferrell would keep Lindsey’s secret. Lindsey would keep Ferrell’s—somehow it seemed to matter to Ferrell even after he was gone. Ferrell wouldn’t hold her demotion against Lindsey; it wasn’t really Lindsey’s fault, and it’s not like Ferrell received a pay cut. Lindsey would ensure Ferrell’s new role wasn’t more difficult than it had to be. Rian was right, Ferrell did have a nice voice and bright smile. She was kind of perfect for the receptionist job, and maybe Lindsey could influence him to grant the woman a raise.
And they could both be friends with Maddie.
Life’s too short to hold a grudge, seemed to be silently said. Or maybe it was, I don’t have the energy to hate you anymore, or make your life harder. Maybe Ferrell really did respect Lindsey now, even liked her. Maybe the feeling was mutual.
“Take off the rest of the week,” Lindsey said, and Ferrell nodded her acceptance.
